Effective June 28, 2025, the European Accessibility Act (EAA) requires operators of online shops to implement technical standards for digital accessibility. The goal is to make websites and online services accessible to all people, including those with disabilities.
What does this mean for Spreadshop users?
The classic Spreadshop theme already fulfills many of the EAA requirements:
- Accessible, responsive design
- Well-structured navigation and content
- Alternative text for images
- Keyboard operability
Important: If you embed your Spreadshop into an external website, the responsibility for ensuring accessibility in that context lies with you as the partner.
What are the technical requirements?
The legal requirements are based on the DIN EN 301 549 standard, which aligns closely with the international WCAG 2.1 guidelines (Level AA). Key requirements include:
- High contrast color schemes
- Full keyboard navigation
- Alternative text for images
- Compatibility with screen readers
- Clear structure and readable content
What tools can I use to test accessibility?
You can use the following tools to assess the accessibility of your shop:
- WAVE Web Accessibility Tool
- Google Lighthouse
- axe DevTools
Our team is constantly improving the Spreadshop platform. The upcoming version, Spreadshop 3.0, set to launch in the coming months, will place a stronger emphasis on accessibility improvements.
